Being a Cambridge Blue-Badge Guide

Talk by Robert Hill

Robert Hill gave an entertaining talk about his experiences over many years of showing groups of visitors around the glories of the city and the university. Initially this grew out of his work as a teacher at one of the language schools, but it developed into a parallel professional activity. The ubiquitous groups of French teenagers loomed large, but there were little surprises, such as contributing to the induction of the incoming Principal of Newnham College. Being prepared for the unexpected was an important skill for a guide.

Robert went on to show his photographs of many more-or-less obscure corners of the colleges and town, challenging us to identify them … at which, collectively, I think we did pretty well! So we were able to applaud ourselves as well as Robert at the end of an enjoyable and stimulating evening.
