Lesley Ford and troupe – Robert Quilter Gilson

8th May 2018 @ 19:30 - 21:00

I Regret to Inform You

At 07:30 on 1 July 1916 the 11th Suffolks, known as the Cambridgeshire Pals, were the first over the top in the Battle of the Somme.

Of the 850 who went over 527 were killed, wounded or missing, mostly within the first ten minutes.  One of these men was 22 year old Lt. Robert Quilter Gilson – Trinity man and great friend of J R R Tolkien.

Lesley Ford and Mike Levy will talk about their recent project to commemorate these “sons of Cambridgeshire” alongside readings from Gilson’s many letters home.  We are delighted to say that we will also be joined by Julia Margretts, great-niece of ‘Rob’ and Shelford resident.

At Stapleford Jubilee Pavilion at 7:45 pm on 8 May.  Admission free for History Society members, or £3 on the door.
